Overview

The primary function of the Training Division is to provide world class recruit training to trooper cadets, who ultimately become fully commissioned troopers serving the citizens of Washington State.  The division also provides various annual training to fully commissioned officers.  This includes firearms training, control tactics training, vehicle operation training, as well as other specialized training as it relates to the trooper job class.  The division also provides leadership training, collision investigation training and other training that is beneficial to agency employees and external stakeholders.

Key Measurements and Statistics

In 2021, the Training Division had significant accomplishments.

  • Commissioning 28 new troopers.
  • Completing 11 Emergency Vehicle Operators Courses for the Criminal Justice Training Commission’s Basic Law Enforcement Academy recruits.

Successes of 2021

2021 presented a number of unprecedented challenges, the most significant for the Training Division was the ability to overcome the complications of housing, feeding, and maintaining the highest level of education for our cadets during a global pandemic.  We were successfully able to complete an Arming Class, a Trooper Basic Training Class, and provided a unique graduation ceremony to celebrate their accomplishments.

In addition, we modified several mandatory training courses for our commissioned officers from an in-person, to a virtual format.  This allowed the department to remain in compliance with the required annual in-service training requirements, while adhering to the safety protocols mandated by the Governor.

The Training Division received its first accreditation in the Public Safety Training Academy Program from the Commission on Accreditation from Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA).

The year saw significant changes in law enforcement tactics with the development of new police reform legislation.  Using on-line and in-person methods, the Training Division was able to provide timely training to all personnel carrying out law enforcement duties.
