February 3, 2021

King County: At approximately 4:45 am this morning, February 3, 2021 Washington State Patrol (WSP) communications received a 9-1-1 call reporting a vehicle traveling the wrong way on I-405.

The location provided was southbound I-405 in the northbound lanes from NE 70th in the Kirkland area and it appeared to be a white or silver Honda.

Troopers immediately began to get into position to intercept the vehicle and attempted to use spike strips to stop the vehicle which was not successful.  The vehicle continued southbound in the northbound lanes until a WSP sergeant was able to get the vehicle to stop as it approached him where he was set up at Coal Creek Parkway.

As more troopers arrived the driver was taken into custody and appeared to be in crisis along with possible impairment.  The driver was taken to Overlake Hospital for an evaluation.  The possible impairment remains under investigation.

The troopers involved did an outstanding job warning other traffic and positioning themselves to bring this incident to an end with no one being struck and injured or worse.  Awesome work!

The Washington State Patrol would like to remind drivers to stay alert at all times and have a plan if you should encounter a wrong way vehicle or any other hazards during your commute.
