Chewelah, WA – May 30, 2021 at 7:10pm, police officers from the Chewelah Police Department and deputy’s from the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) responded to a 911 call reporting an armed male firing a weapon at the Chewelah Manor Apartments located at 501 E Main, in Chewelah. After a short standoff, one officer from Chewelah PD and one deputy from SCSO discharged their service weapons striking the armed suspect. The suspect, 59 year old John Casey was provided aid and transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Casey was then booked into the Stevens County Jail for domestic violence assault and burglary.
Detectives from the Washington State Patrol (WSP) and Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene to independently investigate the officer involved shooting. The Washington State Patrol Crime Scene Response Unit also responded to process evidence gathered from the scene. Two handguns along with other evidence was collected as part of the investigation. The Washington State Patrol will be the managing agency for this incident. Once the independent investigation is complete the results will be forwarded to the Stevens County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
The name of the officer and deputy that discharged their firearms will be released by their agencies at a later time. Both are on administrative leave per their agencies policy.
