National Community Risk Reduction Week

January 17, 2024

Olympia – The State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) is joining safety professionals across the nation to promote the awareness of Community Risk Reduction (CRR) Week, January 15-21, 2024.

CRR is a data-driven process that identifies and prioritizes the reduction of fire and life safety risks. When done strategically, the results will help invest resources to reduce the risks occurrence and impact with the goal to build healthy, safe, and resilient communities. For fire service agencies, share the role of CRR and show how, no matter what type whether paid or volunteer, can use CRR concepts to make the community safer.

This year CRR Week kicks off on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is a National Day of Service on the Monday, January 15h. Although CRR Week coincides with Dr. King Jr’s Day celebration, CRR is something that applies to every community year round.

Data submitted to the SFMO from fire departments in Washington State shows there were more than 30,733 fire incidents reported in 2022, resulting in 81 civilian fire fatalities and an estimated $330 million in property damage.

The SFMO is committed to protecting the residents of Washington State and their property in collaboration with the fire service and other public safety professionals through CRR efforts.
