Home Fire Sprinklers

June 9, 2025

Olympia –The State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) emphasizes the critical role of home fire sprinklers in enhancing residential fire safety. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), homes with fire sprinklers see up to a 90% reduction in fire-related deaths and significantly less property damage compared to those without. In fact, Washington State reported zero fire fatalities in 2024 in buildings equipped with sprinklers. Several cities across the state, including Olympia and Redmond, have adopted ordinances requiring fire sprinklers in new single-family homes highlighting a growing commitment to protecting lives and enhancing community safety.

Home fire sprinklers are designed to activate individually, targeting only the area affected by fire, which minimizes water damage. They can be seamlessly integrated into new constructions or retrofitted into existing homes. Regular maintenance, such as monthly visual inspections and annual professional check-ups, ensures their optimal performance. For homeowners who are considering retrofitting, resources like the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition can provide comprehensive guides and videos to assist in the process.

The SFMO recommends installing residential fire sprinklers based on the following benefits:

  • Life Safety: Reduce the risk of fire-related deaths by up to 89%.
  • Property Protection: Limit fire damage, often containing fires with just one or two sprinkler activations
  • Environmental Impact: Use significantly less water than fire department hoses, reducing water damage and runoff.
  • Cost-Effective: Average installation costs are approximately $1.35 per square foot in new constructions.
  • Insurance Benefits: Many insurance companies offer premium discounts for homes with sprinkler systems.
