Olympia – February 2-8, 2025, is National Burn Awareness Week. This year’s emphasis is on preventing burns in the home. Burn hazards can be found in every living space, including houses, apartments, and temporary shelters. By taking a few simple precautions, you can reduce the risk of burns and protect everyone in your home. Implementing safety measures in each area—from the kitchen to the bathroom—can help create a safer environment. Even small changes can make a significant impact in preventing burns.
According to the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) 2018 Scald Prevention Safety Tip Sheet, scald burns are the second leading cause of all burn injuries. A scald is a burn from close contact with hot liquid or steam. Scalds are the most common type of burn affecting young children. Children ages four and under are at the most risk for scald burns, because they like to explore and are not always aware of what can hurt them.
During National Burn Awareness Week, practice these safety tips throughout your home to keep you and your loved ones safe:
- Keep cords out of reach of children and pets and out of walkways.
- Check smoke alarms monthly.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when charging devices and storing chemicals.
- Don’t multitask when cooking or transferring hot foods.
- Set water heater below 120°F.
- Avoid heating pads without an auto shut-off feature.
