2020 Annual Report: Office of Professional Standards

Overview

The Office of Professional Standards (OPS) provides oversight for the agency’s complaint and disciplinary procedures. OPS is supported by the Internal Affairs (IA) Section, which investigates all allegations of serious misconduct and/or performance allegations involving WSP employees. OPS ensures investigations are timely, complete, and standardized discipline is imposed.  OPS works collaboratively with districts and divisions to provide accurate and timely counsel when allegations are identified, guidance throughout the administrative process, and follow-up to prevent future occurrences. In addition to agency internal investigations, other local, county or state agencies can contract with OPS on a case-by-case basis for IA to conduct administrative investigations.

Key Measurements and Statistics

Successes of 2020

Despite the unique situation and challenges faced in 2020, OPS continued to meet division objectives in a teleworking environment.

  • Make the Office of Professional Standards a great place to work by engaging with all division employees to foster trust, promote a respectful working environment, enhance skills, improve processes, and celebrate successes.
  • Facilitate informed decisions through purposeful and professional customer service.

In 2020, OPS provided cross-training to seven supervisors from across the agency.  This included three commissioned supervisors and four civil service supervisors.  However, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were not able to continue with in-person cross-training.  Therefore, OPS implemented a pilot program for remote cross-training, which was a success.  As a result, OPS is moving forward with scheduling additional supervisors through this remote platform.

OPS also provided training to one Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer Basic Training Class and one Trooper Basic Training Class at the WSP Academy, and one Supervisor Basic Training Class via remote platform in 2020.
