Narcan Deployment Saves Life

April 7, 2020

Spokane – On April 6, 2020, at 3:48 p.m., a Washington State Patrol Sergeant working in the area of State Route 395 and Hastings Rd, in north Spokane County heard EMS being dispatched to a person who was unresponsive in the area.  Sergeant Greg Riddell found a 24 year old female down in a parking lot.  The female was not breathing, had no pulse and there were signs of drug use.

Sergeant Riddell deployed his issued Narcan nasal spray.  Within 30 seconds, the female started breathing again and had a pulse.  Firefighters from Spokane County District 9 and medics from AMR arrived shortly after and took over care of the patient.  The female was transported to an area hospital.  Paramedics indicated that without Sergeant Riddell’s quick response the female would have likely not survived.

The Washington State Patrol issued Narcan to its field force to help combat the deadly effects of drug overdoses.  Narcan is used to help reverse the effects of drug overdoses and give first responders the tools to save lives.
