What to Do If Your Clothing Catches Fire

August 13, 2020 –

Olympia – Wearing loose clothing around open flames increases the risk of burns and other injuries.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office recommends you keep loose clothing away from heat sources
especially when cooking, lighting fires in a fireplace or fire pit, or using candles.
If you find yourself in a hazardous situation, remember this old saying still applies: Stop, Drop, and
Roll.
• Stop. Moving may allow the fire to spread and delays extinguishment.
• Drop to the ground.
• Cover your face with your hands.
• Roll over back and forth over and over until the fire is out.
• Once the flames are out, remove any loose clothing that has not been burned. Do not remove
burned clothing that is stuck to the skin.
• As necessary, seek immediate help or call 911.
For more information, contact the State Fire Marshal’s Office at (360) 596-3929.
