Olympia – According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), almost half (44%) of reported home fires started in the kitchen. Two-thirds (66%) of home cooking fires start with the ignition of food or other cooking materials.
To reduce the number of cooking fires, the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) advises residents to always keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Do not attempt to move the pan. Leave the pan on the stove and covered until cool. If an oven fire starts, turn off the oven and leave the door closed until its cool.
