Overview

The Fire Training Division (FTD) provides fire service training through the operation of the Washington State Fire Training Academy (FTA) in North Bend, WA. The FTD also provides regional delivery of recruit academies and training courses across the state of Washington. In addition, the FTA hosts a variety of other training related to law enforcement, military, general industry and research and development.

Key Measurements and Statistics

Successes of 2021

The FTA was under limited operation in 2021, due to impacts from the COVID-19 Pandemic. During this past year, a bid request was submitted for the construction of two new burn buildings and expansion of the training ponds. These projects, when completed, will allow increased training opportunities for the state fire service and other entities. This could not have happened if the special use permit was not approved by King County. It is anticipated that following bid reviews, the contract will be awarded in early 2022, bringing the FTA Master Plan closer to realization. Other success include, utilization of telecommuting which helped staff have a better work/life balance during a time of unknowns.
