TACOMA – A motorist was targeted and shot at by the driver of another vehicle on southbound I-5 at the interchange ramp to westbound SR-16. Washington State Patrol (WSP) detectives are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the fleeing vehicle and driver.
On Monday, August 9, 2021, at approximately 10:39 p.m., a black Toyota passenger car with a luggage rack on its roof, was traveling southbound on I-5, just north of the interchange ramp to westbound SR-16. The vehicle crossed several lanes of southbound I-5 from the left to the right. In the process of changing lanes, the black Toyota crossed directly in front of a red Mazda passenger car before it continued towards the interchange ramp to westbound SR-16. When the driver of the Mazda, who continued southbound on I-5, came even with the black Toyota, he observed its driver pointing an object at him, followed by muzzle flash and two audible shots. One bullet struck the Mazda’s rear passenger door. The black Toyota passenger car continued westbound on SR-16.
The driver of the Toyota was described as a black male. While unable to determine the year and make, the vehicle was described to have a “Get in Go” sticker next to its rear license plate and a white sticker on its driver’s side. Investigators believe the vehicle entered southbound I-5 from Port of Tacoma Rd several minutes prior to the incident.
WSP Detectives request assistance to locate the suspect vehicle. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Det. Kevin Pratt at (253) 538-3173.
