WSP Media Release Cover

June 22, 2022

Spokane – Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers from around the state will be in Spokane starting Friday, June 24th to ensure safe travel for motorists traveling to Spokane to enjoy Hoopfest 2022 after a two-year break. Hoopfest has historically been the largest 3 on 3 basketball tournament in the country. Troopers will be focusing on speed, distracted driving and impaired driving violations as thousands of players and spectators travel to the region to participate in Hoopfest 2022.

WSP is partnering with the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC) to provide 25 extra shifts for troopers to conduct emphasis patrols from Friday through Sunday in the greater Spokane area. Troopers will be conducting aerial speed enforcement patrols and extra DUI enforcement patrols to remove impaired drivers from our roadways. The WSP Mobile Impaired Driving Unit (MIDU) will be in Spokane to assist with DUI processing and booking while working with local law enforcement partners. Motorists traveling across the state will notice an increased presence by troopers and are reminded to plan for increased travel time this weekend.

WSP reminds drivers to drive sober, slow down, buckle up and don’t drive distracted this weekend. “Our goal is to have a safe and enjoyable Hoopfest weekend while ensuring motorists drive safely and are not impaired” said Captain Jeff Otis, Spokane District 4 Commander.
