TACOMA, Wash. – The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is seeking the public’s help locating a driver who fled the scene of a collision on Interstate 5 near the Tacoma Dome that left a University Place man with serious injuries Friday morning.
The crash occurred at 7:50 a.m. on July 14 after two white BMW passenger cars were allegedly racing in the northbound lanes of I-5. One of the BMWs rear-ended a grey Toyota Tundra pickup truck occupied by the University Place man, his wife, and their two young children. The pickup truck was pushed into a concrete barrier and rolled several times before coming to rest blocking the left lanes of the interstate.
The University Place man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries but is expected to recover. His wife and two children were also transported but later released with minor injuries.
The driver of the BMW that hit the Toyota remained on scene and the driver was taken into custody for vehicular assault. The second BMW allegedly racing was last seen northbound on I-5 driving toward Fife. That vehicle was described by witnesses as a newer white BMW with tinted windows and black rims.
Witnesses so far have been unable to provide investigators with any further details that would aid in the apprehension of the fleeing BMW and its driver. Anyone who witnessed the collision or may have additional information is asked to contact Detective Tessa Schahfer via email at tessa.schahfer@wsp.wa.gov or by phone at (253) 538-3172.
