May 27, 2025
Olympia – On Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, 2025, we solemnly honor the courageous individuals who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. This day of remembrance also marks the unofficial beginning of the summer season when increased outdoor activities can lead to a rise in emergencies.
During Memorial Day weekend in 2024, Washington State emergency service agencies reported to the National Fire Incident Reporting System over 10,000 incidents, resulting in approximately $2.46 million in property loss. These statistics underscore the importance of vigilance and safety as we commemorate our fallen heroes.
Follow these safety tips to keep your family safe over this holiday weekend:
- First Aid Preparedness: Carry a first aid kit when traveling or engaging in outdoor activities.
- Grilling Safety: Operate grills in well-ventilated areas, away from structures and flammable materials.
- Fire Safety: Never leave open flames unattended and ensure all fires are fully extinguished before leaving the area.
- Child Safety: Establish a designated “kid-free zone” around cooking and grilling areas.
- Equipment Clearance: Maintain adequate distance between heating equipment and any structures or combustible materials.
