The Fire Training Academy became its own Division within the Fire Protection Bureau. Lean was implemented in Washington State Agencies, after Governor Jay Inslee signed an executive order urging state agencies to improve services, outcomes and performances of state government; and created the Results Washington commission.

On May 23, the Skagit River Bridge on I-5 collapsed at approximately 7:00 pm. Trooper Sean O’Connell Jr. died a week later while conducting traffic control in the area when his motorcycle was struck by a box truck. On December 6th, the new Skagit River Bridge was renamed in honor of fallen Trooper O’Connell Jr.

The Patrol participated in the I-5 Challenge over the Thanksgiving holiday. WSP was joined by the California Highway Patrol Commission and the Oregon State Police Major, who challenged drivers in the three states to “Arrive Alive with zero fatalities on I-5 during the holiday; which is one of the busiest holiday weekends of the year. Washington drivers met this challenge. Oregon reported no fatalities on I-5 and California reported only one fatality. Initiative 502, the Marijuana Reform Initiative, was passed by voters in Washington State in November 2012, and went into effect December 1, 2013.
